Aquarium Water Plants : Beautiful, Easy, and Low Cost
Let’s plant some fresh water plants for your aquarium tank. We will discuss the type of plant that is easy to obtain, at a very affordable price, and easy to grow in fresh water without the help of CO2 injections. Before discussing the types of plants, I will answer these two questions. The first question: Where to get aquarium plants? Not too difficult to get these types of plants. Try to get around where you live and look for a fish and aquarium store. There are many fish stores that start to sell water plants for the aquarium. However if you can not find one, you can get these plants online. Search with keywords: aquascape plants. The second question: What is the planting media? To plant these aquatic plants, we will need sand as a substrate where the root of plant will grow. We can use various type of sand which sold in aquarium stores. Other type of substrates are factory-made substrates, which are specially made for aquariums. If you cannot fill the bottom of the aquarium with sand or other substrate types, but yet still want to immediately decorate the aquarium with original aquatic plants, or a while you can also immediately put this water plant complete with its cup at the bottom of the aquarium, like this. Well, let’s discuss the types of plants.
We call this as Tenellus Echinodorus Tennellus. When we plant on front, it will make a carpet because it will grow spread for the price, This plant is sold at 5 – 15 thousand rupiah (about 1 USD) See the following video for more detail. . . Originating from the swamps of northern and southern America, Tennellus is a natural aquatic plant that has sprouted growth when it gets sufficient light and nutrients. CO2 required by this plant is not high as well as the light required, which still in the medium level. If we apply a strong light for this plant, some of its leaves will be colored with a very beautiful reddish tinge. To plant it, separate each stem and plant each stem with a distance of 5 cm, or more dense if you want more lush results. If we planted one such bond right away, the tennellus would only become thick at one point and not spreaded at all area. Planting one by one this plant does indeed need patience, as its small size makes it difficult to plant firmly into the sand. We will needs tweezers, and it will be easier to plant it if the tank has not been filled with water. As time passes, the tennellus will sprout like a greenish grass and all our hassles in planting are repaid with the beautiful view that we can see every day.
The second, we have this plant Cabomba Caroliniana. Cabomba Caroliniana will grow high/tall, so we need to put it on back area hence it will not cover the other plants. Sometimes it will grow until top of water. In the market they sold in price between 3 thousand until 5 thousand rupiah (about 50 cents USD) per cup. This plant has a very fast growth rate. The growth is quite fantastic if we compare it with the growth of other plants. Cabomba, that comes from rivers and ponds in South America will usually grow until the tip reaches the top of water level However, if the light are low,the leaves in the middle used to fall so that the leaves will only be on the top end looks less elegant. The light requirement are indeed quite high but the CO2 requirement is low enough so no additional CO2 injection is required to grow this plant. Sometimes, because the leaves are thick and the stems are thin, this plant will be easily detached from the substrate and lifted onto the water surface. One solution is that we can tie the bottom of the stem of this plant with pebbles or small wood so it is not easily detached from the substrates. When cabomba has been lush, the exotic beauty of this plant will captivate everyone who looks at your aquarium.
Next, we have this. In the water this plant will stand up. Outside water, because I have too long not filled to water so the plant become like this. . . not seems so good but if we plant this in the water, the new leaf will grow easily. . . we call it Valisneria Spiralis. It is very cheap in price, about fifty cents. There are many types of valisneria sold in the market, including valisneria tortifolia or so-called mini twister that looks very beautiful. In general, all type of valisneria will be easy to grow in water with low CO2 and medium light. Valisneria will grow tall until it reaches the surface of the water and waving follow the contours of the water surface. However, in addition to growing up, valisneria will also have a rhizome and develop toward the side, creating roots and new leaves so lush and green. Before planting it, the leaves that old and dry or damaged should be cut first. Do not worry, in a short time valisneria will grow new leaves that are brighter. Plant valisneria on the back as a background plant. We can use tweezers or just a hand. The elegant, graceful valisnerian arches are very pampering to the eyes and make us not bored of seeing them.
Now, the last item, we have this. . . . a moss. This is a java moss. This moss stone sold for 7 thousand rupiah (about 70 cents USD) We can directly put into the water like this look, its green and shiny. . . more detail info, please check it out. . . . The Indonesian people call it as moss (not lumut as their original bahasa) because lumut in the world of aquarium is identical with algae in aquarium. The type of moss shown is the Java Moss. Its scientific name is Taxiphillium Barbieri. This plant is very reliable to survive in water. Just immerse in water and they will surely live. But its growth is usually quite slow. What distinguishes this type from other plants is: moss has no rootsand will grow attached to objects such as stone or wood. Therefore, to plant this, we must tie the moss on those media. Moss usually sold already in a condition tied to a stone or tied in a fern plate or can also be formed as a bonsai plant like this. However, moss are also sold per glass or in small plastic. If you want to make this moss into carpet plant, then we can clamp it using wire mesh. With dark green color and luster on the edges moss can be the perfect beauty of your aquarium.
