Choosing Tropical Fish for your Aquarium – All Freshwater Aquarium Fish Species

Choosing tropical fish

A tropical fish tank with its beautiful and colorful inhabitants is a very impressive sight. However for the novice aquarist it could be a good idea to start with a cold water tank to build up experience and confidence before moving on to more rigorous demands of tropical fish.

How to choose fish for a tropical fish tank

Choosing tropical fish for an aquarium is a matter of personal taste as fish come in a large variety of sizes, shapes and colors. Therefore we’ve come to Woodford aquatics in London to find out how to choose tropical freshwater fish. You can seek further advice from your fish retailer, books and experienced aquarists.

Stocking your aquarium

Step one, you will need a fish retailer with a good selection of fish to choose from. A fish tank, watch videojug film how to set up a tropical fish tank. Step two, deciding how many. The type and number of fish you can keep will depend on the size of your tank. So an easy formula for calculating how many fish you can keep is to multiply the length of the tank by the width to get the surface area and then divide this number by 30. For example a tank length of 90 centimeters multiplied by width of 30 centimeters equals 2700 square centimeters of surface area. Divide this by 30 and you get 90. So this means the tank will hold tropical fish with a total length of about 90 centimeters.

Species of tropical fish

Step three, different types available. There are a vast number of tropical fish species available for keeping in aquariums. Some of the most popular species include tetras, guppies, platies, gouramis, Siamese fighting fish and of course the iconic angelfish. Some of the larger and more specialized varieties include pufferfish, arowanas and piranhas which have a fearsome reputation. Watch film how to care for piranhas.

Now when placing aquarium fish of different species in the same tank together, it’sknown as a community tank. It is important to therefore choose species that are known to be compatible and will not eat each other. So well chosen fish will live together in harmony and will create a stunning aquarium display.
